Partner Vincent E. Doyle III was
recently appointed by New York Governor Eliot Spitzer to the Fourth Judicial
Department Judicial Screening Committee. The Governor established Screening
Committees in each Judicial Department to review and consider the qualifications
of candidates seeking appointment by the Governor to various judicial offices.
Under New York law, the Governor has authority to designate elected Supreme
Court Justices to serve on the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and, with
the advice and consent of the Senate, to make appointments to fill vacancies on
the Supreme Court, the County Court, the Surrogate’s Court and the Family Court.
Under his executive order, Governor Spitzer will designate or appoint only those
candidates who have been screened by the Screening Committees and found to be
highly qualified for judicial office.
